WRA Zimbabwe Values
Integrity
White Ribbon Alliance (WRA) is a people-led global movement for reproductive, maternal and newborn health and rights with a vision for all girls and women around the world to realise their right to quality health and well-being. We are driven by a deep passion and commitment to reducing maternal and newborn deaths, protecting the reproductive rights of girls and women, realising human rights for the marginalised and those discriminated against, amplifying citizen voices and creating demand for quality, safe and accessible healthcare for all.
White Ribbon Alliance Zimbabwe (WRA Zimbabwe) is one of 14 National Alliances globally. It was formed in 2012 as a duly registered Trust on the realisation that national figures of maternal mortality were unacceptably high, prompting the Alliance to embark on advocacy for safe motherhood.
WRA Zimbabwe leverages the power of volunteers to educate and empower, and amplify the needs of citizens across sectors for greater change. WRA Zimbabwe works directly with civil society, community-based organisations, health professional associations, academia, media, politicians, faith-based groups, traditional leaders, and government officials. Furthermore, WRA Zimbabwe operates at the sub-national level through a network of volunteers who support the National Secretariat.
Vision
For all girls and women around the world to realise their right to quality health and well-being.
Mission
To activate a people-led movement for reproductive, maternal and newborn health and rights to realize a Zimbabwe where all girls and women realise their right to health and well-being.
Areas of Focus
WRA Zimbabwe operates in Harare, Kwekwe and Bulawayo.
Champions for Change
In partnership with Abertawe Bro Morgannwa University, WRA Zimbabwe created a cadre of 25 Respectful Maternity Care champion midwives and obstetricians through women-centered care and RMC education in Harare. These champion providers will serve to bring voices together to speak loudly as one.
Building Relationships
WRA Zimbabwe addressed high maternal mortality rates in Kwekwe District by engaging nearly 5,000 women around self-care through effective birth preparedness in emergency situations, raising awareness of birth complications and informing them of their rights to receive quality, respectful care.
Cultivating Respect
WRA Zimbabwe has brought together educators, healthcare providers and communities to establish a culture of mutual understanding and respect. WRA Zimbabwe has directly contributed to the integration of respectful maternity care into medical education by strengthening our partnership with the University of Zimbabwe College of Health Sciences to train fourth-year medical students and facilitate seminars in collaboration with the Zimbabwe Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists.
Community Engagement
We specialize in convening community members and creating linkages to maternal, newborn, child and adolescent health services. Through socialization and education around principles of Respectful Maternity Care, we’ve improved accountability mechanisms and increased capacities of Health Centre Committee members and healthcare providers around their roles and responsibilities to community members at national and district levels.
Campaigns
What Women Want Advocacy Campaign WRA Zimbabwe from September 2021 to February 2022 has implemented the What Women Want Campaign which is a global advocacy camapign. Asking women for their one request for quality reproductive and maternity services https://www.whatwomenwant.org/zimbabwe. This has been achieved with the assistance of community mobilisers, together with collaborating partners. We continue to amplify women’s voices to demand quality reproductive and maternal health services. #women’s voices #whatwomenwant
