A few months after the Chitungwiza and Manyame Rural Residents Association (CAMERA) assisted a number of residents with the correction of disputed bills from Chitungwiza Municipality, it has come to our attention that the same local authority has nicodemusly engaged the services of Wellcash Debt Collectors (Pvt) Ltd. The private firm has since started reaching out to some poor and suffering residents in Chitungwiza demanding astronomical charges and threatening residents with property attachment. This comes at a time the very same debt collection firm was recently removed from Harare City Council and subsequently declared unlawful for local authorities to contract its services.
As such, CAMERA is in the process of engaging officials at the Municipality including lawyers following the havoc that have been wrecked by Wellcash (Pvt) Ltd in the town. The Chitungwiza Municipality once hired Mangwana and Partners Debt Collectors and terminated their contract after objections from residents and stakeholders who had lost their hard earned money. We therefore urge affected residents to deal directly with Chitungwiza Municipality on bill payments and not through any unscrupulous and dubious merchants or agents masquerading as debt collectors.
