On 22 February 2021 Zimbabwe launched the national COVID-19 vaccination program with the intention to immunise 60% of the countrys estimated 14million people, that is 8.4million with the hope of achieving herd immunity by the end of year.
As at at Wednesday 19 May 2021,a total of 605 556 had received their 1st dose while 239 128 had been fully vaccinated. This means that only 4.04% of the population have at least received one dose.
Green Institute is worried about the slow pace of the country’s COVID 19 vaccination program and statics above are not encouraging.
We recommend the following going forward:
Empowerment of the Environmental Health and Health Promotions department to deal with health education such that people are given information regarding the vaccines ,about it’s safety, it’s effectiveness and dispel all myths and miscommunication which are surrounding this vaccine.
Transparency in procurement and distribution of the vaccine especially on the issue of the on-going vaccination tourism in Victoria Falls.
Decentralising the vaccination points especially in rural communities
