THREE people are appearing in a Zimbabwean court answering to charges of insulting President Emmerson Mnangagwa as authorities intensify their clampdown on dissent.
In Bindura in Mashonaland Central province, Saymore Mashorokoto and Evermore Kakurira have been summoned to appear at Bindura Magistrates Court on Friday 13 September 2019 after they were charged with disorderly conduct for allegedly telling Tichaona Svinurai, a fellow resident that President Mnangagwa had dismally failed to revive the country’s political and economic fortunes and that he should hand over power to opposition MDC Alliance party leader Nelson Chamisa.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police charged Mashorokoto, who was in the company of Kakurira with contravening section 41(b) of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act and stated that by uttering such words to Svinurai, he had acted in a disorderly conduct and had used threatening, abusive, or insulting words intending to provoke a breach of the peace or realising that there was a real risk or possibility that a breach of the peace may be provoked.
The 45 year-old Mashorokoto, and the 46 year-old Kakurira are represented by Tinomuda Shoko of Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights (ZLHR).
Meanwhile, Brian Kembo another Bindura resident and Councillor for Ward 3 in Bindura in Mashonaland Central province, will appear in court on Wednesday 18 September 2019 after he was charged with disorderly conduct for allegedly stating that several people in Zimbabwe were stressed owing to President Mnangagwa’s failure to fix the country’s economic crisis after winning the 2018 presidential election.
Kembo is represented by Idirashe Chikomba of ZLHR.
