A ZIMBABWEAN court has ended the incarceration of Rashid Mahiya, the Board Chairperson of Crisis in Zimbabwe Coalition and Executive Director of Heal Zimbabwe Trust and Harare West legislator Hon. Joana Mamombe after granting them bail and imposing some stringent reporting conditions.
First to be set free was Mahiya after he was ordered to pay US$1 000 by High Court Judge Justice Davison Foroma on Thursday 7 March 2019.
Justice Foroma also ordered Mahiya to report twice a week on Mondays and Fridays at Harare Central Police Station, to surrender his passport at Harare Magistrates Court, not to interfere with state witnesses and to continue residing at his given residential address.
Mahiya was arrested on Monday 25 February 2019 and charged with subverting a constitutional government as defined in section 22(2)(a)(i) of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act.
After the release of Mahiya, Justice Foroma on Friday 8 March 2019 ordered the release from prison of Hon. Mamombe after granting her $3 000 bail and ordering her to surrender title deeds to a residential property including to continue residing at her given residence and not to interfere with state witnesses.
Hon. Mamombe was arrested on Saturday 2 March 2019 and charged with subverting constitutional government as defined in section 22 of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act.
Prosecutors alleged that Hon. Mamombe convened a press conference on Monday 14 January 2019 in her constituency where she urged people to overthrow President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s government and encouraged them to engage in civil disobedience and demonstrations in order to shut down the country over the unilateral hiking of fuel and the high cost of living.
