CiZC Chairperson, Rashid Mahiya, remanded in custody

Crisis in Zimbabwe Coalition Chairperson, Rashid Mahiya has been remanded in custody to March 12, 2019 in a case in which he is facing charges of subversion.

The State alleges that Mahiya organized a series of meetings between December 3-6, 2018 during which he incited NGO members, ‘and the general populace of Zimbabwe to subvert a constitutional government by urging all Zimbabweans to engage in acts of civil disobedience, passive resistance to law, public violence, hooliganism and rampant looting across the country’.

The State further alleges that Mahiya is responsible for the violence that ensued during the period from January 14-16, 2019.

In opposing bail, the State submitted that Mahiya has a pending court case and was likely to abscond. The State also submitted that Mahiya was likely to interfere with witnesses and was likely to commit other offences.

Mahiya is being represented by Advocate Tonderai Bhatasara of the Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights who is set to file an application for bail at the High Court tomorrow, February 27, 2019.
