My name is Mauline Gowe. I work for an organization that gives employees permission to involve themselves in meaningful ways within the communities that we work in. Two years ago, I was elected to be chairperson of the largest network of NGO Human Resources practitioners in Zimbabwe. I am happy to report that with the support of my boss, I successfully performed in the role alongside my full time job responsibilities at the International Rescue Committee.
The highlight for me has been the opportunity that I was given through the HR network group to lead a committee that organised annual NGO Games for 2017. The NGO games bring together humanitarian and development practitioners for a day of fun, camaraderie and team-building. All the proceeds from the event go to charity, supporting a local cause or organization.
This year, we partnered with Danai Children’s Home. Danai is a home in Sunridge which is accommodating 31 orphans and vulnerable children. The mission of the home is to safeguard and promote the wellbeing of orphans and vulnerable children. From the NGO games proceeds, we managed to donate a deep freezer, heavy duty washing machine, fridge as well as radio with a roving microphone for the children’s functions such as birthdays and fundraising events.
NGO games, what a unique way of giving back to local community!
