ZESN concerned by post-election violent protests, calls for peace and respect for human rights

The Zimbabwe Election Support Network (ZESN) is concerned by the violence that occurred in Harare yesterday, leading to needless loss of life and urges all political parties, and their supporters to exercise restraint. ZESN also calls upon law enforcement agents to avoid being heavy handed in their efforts to restore order.

ZESN urges the Chapter 12 institutions especially the Zimbabwe Human Rights Commission and the National Peace and Reconciliation Commission to closely monitor the unfolding political developments and ensure that human rights are respected and upheld to avoid unnecessary loss of life and damage to property.

In addition, the Network calls upon the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) to expedite the announcement of verified results for the presidential elections. In order to enhance transparency and confidence in the results management process, ZEC should ensure that the V11 forms are made available to electoral stakeholders and posted on their website for the general public.

May the souls of the slain innocent Citizens rest in eternal peace.

ZESN continues to monitor the political environment and electoral processes in the post-election phase.
