Public Hearings on Child Justice Bill – 4 to 8 April: Committee Series 9/2022

The Portfolio Committee on Justice, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs will conduct public hearings on the above Bill from Monday 4th to Friday 8th April – next week. The committee will split up into two teams in order to cover as many centres around the country as possible. The programme is shown in the attached document supplied by Parliament. The usual rules will apply:

ALL THOSE WHO WILL BE WEARING MILITARY UNIFORMS, SIGNS OF RANKS, FLAGS OR BADGES AND POLITICAL PARTY REGALIA WILL NOT HAVE ACCESS TO THE PUBLIC HEARING.

The public hearings will at all times comply with the Ministry of Health and child Care COVID 19 Regulations regarding the observing of social distancing, sanitization, temperature screening and wearing of facial masks. All members of the public are urged to observe these requirements which will be monitored by the Ministry of Health and Child Welfare teams.

The public, interested groups, organisations are invited to attend these public hearings.

About the Bill

The Child Justice Bill is available on the Veritas website . The Bill includes an Explanatory Memorandum by the drafter. The Bill was gazetted for public information on 3rd December 2021. It was introduced in the National Assembly on 17th February by the Minister of Justice, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs and immediately referred to the Parliamentary Legal Committee for its report on the Bill’s consistency or otherwise with the Constitution. That report has not yet been returned to the National Assembly, which will resume sitting on Tuesday 5th April after a recess of two and a half weeks.
