Zanu PF Activists Disrupt PVO Amendment Bill Public Hearing

Crisis In Zimbabwe Coalition notes with concern the disruption of the PVO Amendment Bill public hearing held in Highfield, Harare today, February 28, 2022.

The public hearing ended prematurely after rogue Zanu PF activists, who were seeking to dominate the event, disrupted proceedings.

It is quite apparent that the ruling party, Zanu PF has devised a strategy to bus thugs to the public hearings as part of efforts to push for amendments to the Private Voluntary Organisations (PVO) Act.

This will certainly compromise citizens’ participation in these public hearings and ultimately lead to a flawed process.

We deplore the violent nature of the Zanu PF activists and implore the ruling party to exercise tolerance of divergent views.

We reiterate that amendments to the PVO Act are part of efforts to close the democratic space in Zimbabwe and citizens must unite in rejecting these amendments which will curtail fundamental freedoms and entrench authoritarian rule.
