JSC Secretary Walter Chikwanha’s meeting with Justice Chinhamora that led to the recusal of the judge in the matter were Chamunhorwa Chingwe is challenging the appointment of Supreme Court judges has drawn the attention of lawyers. Respected lawyer and human rights defender, Beatrice Mtetwa, has requested the Acting Chief Justice, Justice Gwaunza, to institute disciplinary proceedings against Chikwanha.
“Apart from the incident (the meeting with Chinhamora), it also appears Mr Chikwanha has, in various litigations deposed affidavits purportedly on behalf of the JSC when in fact the Commission would not have authorised him to do so,” said Mtetwa in a letter to Gwaunza.
“I request that these allegations be independently investigated, and such investigation be done while he is on a leave of absence as provided for in the relevant JSC disciplinary legislation,” added Mtetwa.
Justices Tsanga and Chirawu-Mugomba heard the Chingwe case and will deliver judgment this week.
