Gweru: Vendors move sales into homes

The ban on informal traders from operating and their subsequent relocation following the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in many houses and cars being turned into marketing stalls.

An informal trader who asked to be identified as Mai Kiki used to operate at Kudzanayi Bus Terminus noted that she now works at her home place to provide for her family.

“After we were stopped to operate as part of the precautionary measures to stop the spread of Corona virus many of us decided to start selling from our houses. Though there is Corona we still need food on our tables,” she said.

Food vendors were the main target of the demolition and clean up campaign by the council. However, another crop of vending has come to the fore in the last few years, that is clothing vendors operating from their cars.
