Statement on the Alleged Abduction of Dr. Peter Magombeyi

The Zimbabwe Association of Doctors for Human Rights (ZADHR) has learnt with shock and dismay of the alleged abduction of Dr. Peter Magombeyi, the President of the Zimbabwe Hospital Doctors Association (ZHDA). The abduction of Dr Magombeyi is an attack on the health profession, organised labour and the right of workers to picket.

Dr Magombeyi is leading the current industrial action by government doctors and ZADHR believes his abduction is a result of his activities in defending the rights of health workers. Increased attacks on professional are an impediment to international reengagement as it casts a negative perception on the country.

ZADHR calls upon the Minister of Health and Child Care, Dr. Obadiah Moyo to condemn and call for the immediate release of Dr. Magombeyi. We further call upon all Zimbabweans, professionals and doctors in particular to condemn the abduction of Dr. Magombeyi and all threats towards organised labour and the freedoms of professionals to associate, assemble and demonstrate.

Human resources for health remains are a cog in the strengthening of Zimbabwe’s health delivery system. Increased investment into the sector demands political commitment and labour issues can only be resolved through negotiations instead of abductions or threats.

We call upon those with information on the whereabouts of Dr. Magombeyi to report to the nearest police or alternatively to contact ZADHR on 0712 041 838 / 0787 394 866 or the Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights on 0772 257 247
