From Pay Day Funeral to Salary Consolation Church Services for Our Teachers

Amalgamated Rural Teachers’ Union of Zimbabwe, ARTUZ salutes the citizens of Zimbabwe and the world at large for the overwhelming solidarity we received during our Pay Day Funeral. The Pay Day funeral of Friday 23 August saw multitudes of citizens of the world wearing black in solidarity with the under paid civil servants of Zimbabwe.

We note with disgust the heavy handedness of the Zimbabwe Republic Police who shamelessly crushed our peaceful protest. We condemn the brutal crackdown of our peaceful protest and the brutal assault of our lawyer Douglas Coltart. We are further irked by the senseless arrest of journalist Leopold Munhende and compatriot Simon Drury. We are saddened by the arrest and detention of our members who were simply excising their constitutional rights.

We are glad that our protest forced government to increase civil servants’ salaries. The 76% increment however falls short of the cost of living which has shot up by over 500% on an annual scale.

Way forward

ARTUZ is organising church services to console our civil servants who are victims of underpayment and State brutality.

The Union will be launching “MaNyaradzo” for our salaries this Friday 30 August 2019 at a Harare venue to be disclosed soon.

The church services will later be held in all provinces and districts of Zimbabwe.

The church services are meant to console our hardworking but underpaid civil servants who also bear the brunt of crude state brutality.
