Continued Arrest of HRDs, Worrying

Heal Zimbabwe is gravely concerned over the continued arrest of Human Rights Defenders (HRDs). On 27 May 2019, Sitabile Dewa and Rita Nyamupinga were arrested upon arrival at Robert Mugabe international airport.

The arrest of the two follows a story that was published in the Herald in recent weeks that implicated several HRDs in a plot to unseat the government by participating in regime change training in Prague, Czech Republic. Last week five other CSO leaders were arrested over the same charges and this brings to seven the number of human rights defenders in the last seven days.

Heal Zimbabwe views the arrests as a relentless target of human rights defenders that is meant to silence and cower citizens from enjoying their fundamental human rights and freedoms that are exclusively provided for in the constitution. Heal Zimbabwe maintains that the arrested HRDs are innocent and calls for their unconditional release.
