Penal reform

  • Critical Resistance
    Critical Resistance (CR) was formed in 1997 when activists challenging the idea that incarceration is the panacea for all our social ills came together to organize a conference. They believe that basic necessities such as food, shelter, and freedom are what really make our communities secure.
  • Penal Reform International
    Penal Reform International (PRI) is an international non-governmental organisation. Founded in London, UK, in 1989, PRI has members in five continents and in over 80 countries. PRI develops programmes on a regional basis, assisting both non-governmental organisations and individuals to establish projects in their own countries.

Poverty Alleviation

  • Bread for the World
    We do not provide direct relief or development assistance. Rather, we focus on using the power we have as citizens in a democracy to support policies that address the root causes of hunger and poverty.
  • Center for Global Development (CGD)
    CGD is an independent think tank that works to reduce global poverty and inequality by encouraging policy change in the U.S. and other rich countries through rigorous research and active engagement with the policy community.
  • Progressio (formerly Catholic Institute for International Relations (CIIR))
    Progressio is an international development charity working for justice and the eradication of poverty. It works in partnership with civil groups and governments in Latin America, the Caribbean, Africa, the Middle East, South East Asia, the UK and Europe. Its approach combines advocacy work to secure equitable policies with the strengthening of community-based organisations that represent the interests of the poor and improve their quality of life. Through its country programmes, Progressio places experienced professionals to share their skills with partners in 11 countries.
  • Southern African Regional Poverty Network (SARPN)
    SARPN's ultimate goal is to contribute to the sustainable reduction of poverty through effective pro-poor policy, strategy and practice in the SADC region. Its purpose is to deepen and widen debates on policy, strategy, practice and decision-making processes that impact on poverty in the region. SARPN provides platforms that widen participation by bringing people together across the region to exchange ideas, and disseminates information to deepen understanding of poverty issues and improve policy and practice.

    Privacy International (PI) is a human rights group formed in 1990 as a watchdog on surveillance and privacy invasions by governments and corporations. PI is based in London, England, and has an office in Washington, D.C. PI has conducted campaigns and research throughout the world on issues ranging from wiretapping and national security, to ID cards, video surveillance, data matching, police information systems, medical privacy, and freedom of information and expression.

  • Internal Displacement Monitoring Centre (IDMC)
    During the 1990s, there was growing recognition of the need to improve the response, especially by the UN, to the protection and assistance of internally displaced persons. Objectives are: To promote the use of the Guiding Principles on internal displacement; To make information available on IDP issues and country-specific situations; To support the capacity of the international community to better respond to situations of internal displacement.     Refugees International generates lifesaving humanitarian assistance and protection for displaced people around the world, and works to end the conditions that create displacement.

Religion

  • The World Council of Churches (WCC)
    Located in over 100 countries, WCC member churches [now 342] come from nearly every Christian tradition. The WCC collaborates with national and regional Christian councils, international organizations of Christian World Communions (e.g., Lutheran, Reformed, Methodist) and many specialized international ecumenical bodies. Through its Commission of the Churches on International Affairs it is accredited as a nongovernmental organization with the United Nations.

  • Centre for Victims of Torture
    Works locally, nationally and internationally to heal the wounds of torture on individuals, their families and their communities and to stop torture worldwide.
  • International Rehabilitation Council for Torture Victims
    The International Rehabilitation Council for Torture Victims (IRCT) is an independent, international health professional organization, which promotes and supports the rehabilitation of torture victims and works for the prevention of torture worldwide.
  • Redress
    Redress seeks to rebuild the lives and livelihoods of torture survivors and their families so that they become active and contributing members of society again; to eradicate the practice of torture world-wide.
  • Themba Lesizwe - South African Network of Trauma Service Providers - SANTSEP
    Themba Lesizwe is a Trust registered as a section 21 (not for profit) organisation. Its overall objective is to contribute to the creation of a more peaceful society and to achieve increased capacity for South Africans to cope with the legacy of political and criminal violence by ameliorating victims' care and preventing re-victimisation of survivors of violence.
  • World Organisation Against Torture (OMCT)
    OMCT is today the largest international coalition of NGOs fighting against torture,summary executions, forced disappearances and all other forms of cruel, inhuman and degrading treatment in order to preserve Human Rights.
