After the election: A crisis in Zimbabwe

Since the 29 March election, over 30 people have been killed in post election violence. Hundreds of men, women and children have been beaten with whips, chains and sticks. Huts have been burnt and livestock has been slaughtered. Post election violence has been sweeping across Zimbabwe including Mashonaland, Harare and Manicaland. The majority of reports indicate that the perpetrators of this violence are members of Zanu PF, or youth militia members dressed in police or army uniforms. But there are also reports of MDC supporters attacking Zanu PF members.

See for yourself

A 13 DVD produced by the Solidarity Peace Trust - After the election: A crisis in Zimbabwe graphically depicts the brutality of the post-election period. Using first hand accounts by victims of violence - and the family members of those murdered - the video conveys the extent of the physical and psychological scars of this violence.

You can download this video here, or ask us to send you a copy. Send a text message with your postal address to +263 912 452 201 to request the DVD - and text us your ideas on how ordinary Zimbabweans can stand up to this violence and take back our power.

Watch the DVD with your friends and colleagues and send an email to and let us know what you thought of it.

Get OUTraged, get INvolved

Our current electronic activism page focuses on the post election violence in Zimbabwe.

Escalating cases of organised violence and torture
900 victims have reported incidents of organised violence and torture. But this figure grossly underestimates the number of victims presenting countrywide as the violence is now on such a scale that it is impossible to properly document all cases. There have been 22 confirmed deaths but at least double that number have been reported but are yet to be confirmed. Read more from Zimbabwe Association of Doctors for Human Rights

Land, retribution and elections
The immediate aftermath of Zanu PF's 2008 election defeat has included drastic consequences for the few remaining commercial farmers and their workers. The current surge in invasions and human rights violations on the farms is violent, widespread and systematic. Read more from Justice for Agriculture
