Accept the challenge: Get organised in resistance

In the cover article of the July Socialist Worker, the International Socialist Organisation of Zimbabwe has some fiery suggestions for how Zimbabwe can move forward in the current political crisis. They recommend that civil society work together, mobilise for a united front, and rally for democracy. They call for civil society and the opposition to regroup and launch "a serious and determined programme supported by regional and international solidarity from working people's and progressive movements."

They acknowledge that this will not be easy. But they make a few suggestions as to how to build a united front of resistance, both among civic groups themselves, and within the opposition.

To kick-start the campaign, the ISO proposes:

  • The urgent holding of a massive national Rally for Democracy in Harare, convened by a united front of the opposition, civic groups, trade unions and churches.
  • The Rally must be supported by a full scale general strike by workers and traders and class boycotts as well as regional and international solidarity actions from organisations of working people, socialists, the anticapitalist movements and democrats.

The purpose of this rally would be to fight people's fear, and to send a message to the regime that the people reject the illegitimate 27 June "elections," and that the people will not be cowed. Read more

Ignite some action:

- If you are a member of or staff person in a civil society organisation, approach others in this group to get them involved and see what your group can contribute to this united resistance - and how you can bring other groups together to make it happen.

- If you aren't already a member of a local CSO, consider writing to some of the larger organisations in the country that work on democracy and good governance issues, and challenge them to take up this initiative. Groups to approach include:
