Journalist Chin’ono granted bail

Journalist Hopewell Chin’ono was on 27 January 2021 granted bail by High Court judge Justice Foroma following his arrest and detention at Chikurubi Maximum Security Prison on charges of publishing or communicating falsehoods prejudicial to the State.

He was arrested on 8 January 2021.

Justice Foroma ordered that the same bail conditions in the case in which he is also charged with incitement to participate in a gathering with intent to promote public violence would apply in this case.

Chin’ono was also ordered to pay ZW$20 000 at the Magistrates Court in Harare.

The conditions included that Chin’ono surrender title deeds to his Colne Valley home in Harare. He should also continue to reside at his Chisipite home and report twice a week at the nearest police station.

Chin’ono is also charged with defeating or obstructing the course of justice, bringing the total number of charges he is facing to three.
