Forum Challenges Dire Water Situation in Prisons

Harare High Court Judge, Justice Siyabona Musithu is on the 19th of November 2020 expected to hear an urgent chamber application filed by the Zimbabwe Human Rights NGO Forum challenging a critical water shortage at Chikurubi Maximum Prison. The water situation is so dire that inmates have had to forego bathing after spending several weeks without water. Inmates are now relying on pond water for drinking. As a result of this water shortage there is now an outbreak of diarrhea and there is no medication.

The Forum swiftly filed an urgent chamber application to compel, in their respective roles, the Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Services (ZPCS) Minister of Justice, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs, Minister of Water and Ministry of Finance and Economic Development to provide water adequate water and medication for inmates. The situation in the prisons is so disturbing that the Forum has approached the High Court for the second time to compel the ZPCS and government to take measures to address the inhuman and degrading conditions of detentions by which the prisoners are subjected to.
