Investigation into Gender Dimensions of the Disturbances of Monday 14 January 2019 and the Aftermath

The Zimbabwe Gender Commission (ZGC) has been following events since Monday 14 January 2019, in which a nationwide stay-away dubbed #Shutdown Zimbabwe degenerated into violent demonstrations across the country. Roads were barricaded, retail shops were looted and property burnt. There were also alleged cases of sexual violence.

The Commission is deeply concerned about these developments, as there are always gender dimensions in conflict situations as women, men, boys and girls are affected differently. The Commission has thus been collecting information to appreciate the inherent gender dynamics and respond accordingly.

The Commission has to this end, instituted an investigation and is calling upon the victims, the general public and organisations to report any gender based violations to the Commission.

Reports should be directed to the Legal and Investigation Unit telephone nos. 0242-254073, 0242-254074, 0242-250603 or email to info@zgc.co.zw

For more information, contact the Chairperson to the Commission, Ms Margaret Mukahanana Sangarwe, on 0242-250937
